Cloud server backups
Cloud server backups
Every Kapsule Cloud Server includes daily off-site backups stored in encrypted storage and kept for 30 days.
What's backed up
The backup includes:
- Website files, your application code and uploads
- Databases, all databases on the server
- Server configuration, system and service configs
- Cron jobs and system state, scheduled tasks and OS state
- Mail, email data (if mail is configured on the server)
You can view what's in a backup by expanding the "What's in your backup" section in the Backups card.
Backup schedule
Backups run daily automatically. The Backups card shows: "Daily off-site backups to encrypted storage, kept for 30 days."
Triggering a manual backup
To take a backup immediately outside the daily schedule:
- Open your server in Cloud Servers
- Find the Backups card
- Click Back up now
Backup status
The Backups card shows the status of your most recent backup:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Backed up | Last backup completed successfully |
| Running | Backup in progress |
| Failed | Last backup failed, retrying on next schedule |
If the latest backup failed, a warning appears: "The most recent backup failed. We'll keep retrying on the daily schedule. Check disk space, or contact support if this persists."
Restoring from a backup
- Find the backup you want to restore in the Backups card
- Click Restore
- Confirm the restore, the server will apply the backup
Restoring replaces current server state. All changes made since the backup was taken will be lost. If you're unsure, take a manual snapshot first.
Backups vs snapshots
| Backups | Snapshots | |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Off-site, encrypted | Same infrastructure |
| Retention | 30 days automatic | Manual management |
| Schedule | Daily automatic | On demand (+ pre-patch automatic) |
| Use case | Data protection, disaster recovery | Pre-change safety net |
Both are available from the server detail page.
